Nutrition Lab
Grades 3-6th

The program’s structure has been designed to include four lessons throughout the year for each grade level 3rd -6th grade. Our goals include helping students understand the importance of making healthy food choices from across various food groups. We have arranged the lessons to represent a variety of foods, some of which the students might not be as familiar with and might consider trying for the first time.

We will be making breakfast foods, lunch foods and snacks over the course of the year with the goal of empowering students to work independently at home to prepare some of these foods themselves.

We will aim to provide background information and activities that support nutrition concepts as well as enhance classroom learning with respect to math and science standards appropriate to each grade level. Activities will be particular to each grade level and will be designed to build upon student understanding from year to year as they participate in the program throughout their time at ECC.

Recipes will also be different across the grade levels, introducing new foods and new kitchen skills. The recipes will be sent home with students and made available to families, further enhancing the school to home connection and providing opportunities for students to extend their learning by making the recipes at home.

The recipes are designed to be kid-friendly and easy to make, and each lesson skill will be connected to that week’s recipe so that students can apply what they learn right away.

We intend to offer alternatives for any food allergies by using gluten free or dairy free products and will avoid using nuts in our recipes.

We will vary the presentation depending on the lesson and recipe, some weeks doing the lesson first and other weeks doing the recipe first.

Lessons are designed to be captivating and engaging, allowing students to work collaboratively in small groups, in partners and as teams.

Throughout the Nutrition Lab program, attention will be paid to the supporting the elements of the EUSD Learner Profile, allowing students to be Empowered Learners, Global Citizens, Innovative Thinkers, Wellness Advocates, Skilled Communicators and Confident Collaborators.
